£12 million star Arsenal’s biggest summer signing?

Arsenal made plenty of signings over the summer, but Arsene Wenger is quoted as saying that our £12 million purchase from Southampton was one of our biggest signings of the transfer window.

There is no doubt that Oxlade-Chamberlain is very talented. His cameo against Man Utd went under the radar due to the result, but that wasn’t the case on Tuesday night. Alex was full of energy, skill, pace and direct approach play. He didn’t just look ‘one for the future’ – he looked like he can make an impact in the coming weeks.

Arsenal fans would love to see Theo move more central and Oxlade-Chamberlain take Walcott’s place on the wing. Our new winger has played brilliantly for the Arsenal reserves and the England U21 team in the last month. The praise he is receiving is great – but can he make the step up to the first team? He certainly seems to think so:

“Yeah, definitely [I can play a part in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup]. If you don’t aspire to achieve these things then you are not going to go anywhere.

“Whenever I get the call, I will be delighted with it. You have got to push to become part of the squad more regularly and that only comes with hard work and impressing when you get the chance. It’s important that when you get your chance that you impress.

“You have got to remember that I am here with a lot of top-class players and it’s going to be very hard for me to get in. But I’m prepared for the challenge.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain seems to be quite down to earth. He claims to have ignored as much of the media hype surrounding him as possible – he doesn’t want to “get carried away.” He has also admitted his need to get fitter in order to avoid cramp! In his interview he made it clear that he knows what he has to work on in his game, but at the same time he is ready to play for the first team if he is called upon.

I certainly think the AOC will be a massive player for us in the near future. The question is whether or not he is the biggest signing that Arsenal made this summer. I personally think that Gervinho is our biggest summer signing, but it does depend how you define biggest. In this case, I’d say it’s the player that is going to make the most impressive and immediate impact. Right now, AOC is still a fringe player. Gervinho has already walked straight into the squad – he’s a readymade replacement for Nasri, but even more direct.

Then again, Mertesacker, Santos, Jenkinson, Arteta, Benayoun or Park could all have great seasons for us. Which player do you think is our biggest summer signing?
