Johan Djourou has signed a contract extension with Arsenal which will keep him at the club until 2015.
Arsenal have not yet confirmed that Johan has signed on for another three years, but the fact that the defender himself posted a link on his Twitter page to a news article would seem to give the story at least some credibility.
The Swiss Football Association have also already posted an article announcing the news, so I am sure that Arsenal will follow suit in due course.
Djourou is our longest serving player, having been at the club since 2004, and scored his first and only goal for the club a year ago this week (in our 4-4 draw at St James’ Park).
Djourou told www.football.ch:
“I like this club and I want to stay here as long as possible.
“I currently work in the background, waiting for another chance to show my potential. I have confidence in the future.”
Johan was one of our first-choice centre-backs last season in the absence of Thomas Vermaelen, and developed a relatively strong partnership with Laurent Koscielny. However, Vermaelen’s return from injury, Koscielny’s fantastic form and the signing of Per Mertesacker means that it has become increasingly difficult for him to maintain a place in the starting XI. He had a torrid time at right-back when covering for Sagna and Jenkinson, but that can be forgiven because it is obviously not his natural position.
As happy as I am that we are finally getting round to sorting out contract extensions, I am unsure for how long a Djourou will want to be 4th choice at Arsenal. If he doesn’t get much game-time, then he may have to consider moving elsewhere, if only because not playing every week could have a big effect on his international career. He currently has 30 caps for the Swiss national team.

Oh now … kick that bitch out …
What!!!!!! Whats up with this club, they should be cancelling his contract…he’s crap…slow ..unable to understand basic defending….pay him off!!!
God no! Seems loyal to the club but certainly Arsenal can do better.
Terrible defender. Some of his defending makes Pascal Cygan look like Paolo Maldini. I’d hoped we would get rid of him and Squillaci in the Summer. Nowhere near good enough for us. We need to start getting rid of the deadwood like Almunia, Mannone, Djourou, Squillaci, Rosicky, Arshavin, Chamakh etc.alongside Vela, Denilson and Bendtner . I don’t even want to estimate the money we’ve wasted on these players wages. Once they’ve been cleared off the wage bill, we can bring in players of far greater ability, like Vertonghen, Hazard, Podolski etc and give our key players like Van Persie, Vermaelen, Sagna etc the improved contracts they deserve.
Djourou is nt encouraging at all, well signing another 3 years contract is a good news 4 arsenal because arsenal might fall short of defenders.
Wow i can t believe this, hes one of the worst defenders i have ever seen,i would not have him in my sunday league team, wenger must be blind or stupid or both, get rid of hi, as we cant sell him as no one wants him.
Is Wenger having a laugh? Djourou for another 3 years! Why not extend Denilson’s contract while he’s at it?
Don’t know what Wenger is thinking.
Djourou has been at the club for eight years and still can’t make the starting XI unless there are injuries.
and he knows he can’t join a bigger club than Arsenal if he leaves so he will be more than happy sitting on the bench and playing when he can.
