According to French radio station RMC , AS Monaco made Arsenal an initial loan offer for our out-of-favour centre-back Sebastian Squillaci.
Monaco were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, but were recently bought by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev.
Rybolovlev is keen to add new players to the squad in order to make sure that the club avoids a second consecutive relegation; the team currently sit 19th in Ligue 2.
Squillaci has failed to adapt to the physicality and pace of English football, but is seen as the perfect player to add some experience and bring stability to the Monaco back four. Wenger’s former club have apparently offered to loan Sebastian until the end of the season, with a view to purchasing him from us in the summer if he lives up to their expectations. It is thought that the negotiations are already at a relatively advanced stage, but Monaco want the deal to be finalized within the next week.
Bearing in mind that we already have four very strong centre-backs (5 if you are including Ignasi Miquel), I don’t really see any need to keep hold of Squillaci. He has proved to be “useful” on occasion this season simply because we have so many injuries, but he is never going to force his way back into the Arsenal team and can simply be put on the relatively short list of Wenger’s purchasing mistakes. He has been out-of-favour at Arsenal for quite some time; Arsène initially tried, and failed, to sell him over the summer.
