Arsenal has finally signed FC Koln’s Lukas Podolski for an undisclosed fee (thought to be around £11m). It has been confirmed by Podolski on his social media accounts, as well as by Koln on its official website.
“Lukas Podolski is going to switch from 1. FC Cologne to English Premier League club FC Arsenal. This is what both clubs and the player have agreed on. Both sides agreed to maintain silence about transfer fee details. The player is transferred one year prior to his expiration of contract.”
“The move to Arsenal provides a great opportunity for me to gain experience in international competitions at a European top club. I have made this decision not against FC Cologne but for this great opportunity and the good of my own individual development.
“This was not an easy decision for me at all, as 1. FC Cologne, our fans and the city are something special for me. I will always carry 1. FC Cologne in my heart. We need to pool our strengths now and have to be fully focussed on our survival in the Bundesliga.”

Yes, we all knew this transfer was coming. But it is pleasing to see Arsenal get some transfer business done nice and early, just like Man Utd did last summer. Their purchases had time to settle into the training regimes and get to know their teammates. Arsenal didn’t have that luxury last season, but hopefully Wenger will look to be more efficient with his signings this summer.
We have discussed this signing plenty of times, and there is no doubt he will be a great addition to the squad. Check out this video to see his superb goal on the weekend, despite his team’s defeat. He now has 18 goals this season, managing one goal every 136 minutes, compared to one every 113 minutes by van Persie (stats via @Orbinho).
Welcome to Arsenal Lukas!
