Sunderland 0-1 Arsenal: Player Ratings

Wojciech Szczesny 9 – Outstanding in the second half. It is hard to believe that Sunderland didn’t score. Kept us in the game when Sunderland were hammering our goal after Jenkinson was sent off.

Carl Jenkinson 3 –  Stepped in at right-back to replace Sagna and showed his inexperience by getting sent off for 2 stupid yellow cards.

Bacary Sagna 9.5 MOTM – Bacary Sagna is pretty versatile and had a great game at centre-back. With Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen missing through injury, Sagna was chosen to partner Per Mertesacker at the centre of our defence. He was an absolute beast. A surprise performer following a lot of criticism in recent weeks.

Per Mertesacker 7.5 – Played well in the second half next to Sagna, which was welcome after a few poor performances.

Nacho Monreal 8 – Had a 96% pass completion rate and defended well. A few slightly dodgy moments against Sessegnon, but nothing too terrible.

Mikel Arteta 8 – Solid as usual. Keeps the midfield ticking and his passing is simply sublime.

Jack Wilshere 8.5 – Fantastic in the first half, but was forced off 5 minutes into the second half. We just have to hope to God that he is not missing for the Bayern games or against Spurs and Everton in a few weeks time.

Aaron Ramsey 8 – Aaron has taken a lot of criticism this season, but he played particularly well against Sunderland. He was good going forward and slotted in nicely to cover at right-back once Jenkinson was sent off.

Santi Cazorla: 8.5  – Fantastic in every respect. Won possession on countless occasions and should have had a hattrick if not for some unlucky finishing. Scored the only goal of the game with a nice finish.

Theo Walcott: 7 – Forced Mignolet to make some early saves, was a big part of Santi’s goal, and continued to be a threat in the second half, but his finishing was slightly off.

Olivier Giroud: 7 – A bit like Walcott, his finishing was not that great. He had a good physical presence from set pieces, but fired many shots well wide. Should have passed to Cazorla at the end rather than taking a speculative shot on his own.

Abou Diaby: 7 – Some nice footwork and intricate passing, but not as effective as Wilshere.

Ignasi Miquel N/A – Not on for particularly long, but added some defensive stability.
