Arsenal have finally revealed the long-awaited 2012/13 away kit, which is now available for pre-order and will be officially released on August 9th. The kit has been launched via a viral music video by Rizzle Kicks which stars Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Song and Kieran Gibbs.

A blurb on the Arsenal website describes the kit as combining “a rich purple base with black hoops” with red trim on the cuffs of the shirt that act to complement the purple colouring. What I find particularly interesting is that the purple and black hooped socks are apparently inspired by the socks worn in the 1930s when Arsenal were playing under Herbert Chapman. Chapman designed hooped socks with the intention of maximising player visibility, thinking that the players would find it easier to spot each other on the pitch.

I can’t say that I am the biggest fan of the new kit (it does remind me somewhat of Barney the dinosaur) but I guess it could have been a lot worse. Some of the designs that were doing the rounds on the internet were pretty shocking. Some people on Twitter say that they really like this strip, whereas others really hate it, so I guess to each his own. If Arsenal finally win some silverware then I couldn’t really care less what the away kit looks like.

This kit bears at least some significance to Arsenal’s 3rd-choice kit for the 07/08 season, but not to any away kit I have ever seen. It is a far cry from the yellow (and occasionally blue) away shirts that we are used to seeing, which I am told is because Arsenal gave Nike more creative freedom and instructed them to mix things up. Each kit is made from environmentally friendly materials (using recycled plastic water bottles) and out of fabric that is significantly lighter than we have seen in the past. Maybe the players complained about the old kits being too heavy?…

The back of the collar also features a slightly unnecessary, but still rather cool AFC logo.

A picture of Robin van Persie wearing what is supposedly Arsenal’s new away kit for the 2012/13 season has been doing the rounds on Twitter. This comes only a week after Arsenal revealed next season’s home kit, which is now available for pre-order.

In my opinion, the kit seems to be pretty legitimate at first glance. My only doubts come from looking at our previous away shirts. Arsenal always have a predominately blue or yellow away shirt since the 1960′s; the last time the team’s away shirt wasn’t one of these colours was a weird green kit in the 1982/83 season. However, this photo does remind me of Arsenal’s 3rd kit in the 2007/08 season, so maybe whoever leaked it wasn’t clear whether this is an away shirt, but not the away shirt (i.e the regular away shirt will be yellow or blue).

The photo could, of course, be a fake. Photo editing is a relatively simple process for those of us who have spent a large amount of money on photoshop. Then again, the leaked photos of the home kit turned out to be legitimate. As we reach the end of the season I am starting to doubt the authenticity of more professional-looking images like this slightly less.
