Transfer Talk: Friday 3rd June

Gonzalo Higuaín

The Daily Mail recently suggested that Arsenal are looking to sign Real Madrid’s Argentinian striker. The forward is now in the not-so-elite list of strikers that we have been linked with this summer:

There are plenty more attackers that have been linked with Arsenal, but those are the few which STG have covered over the last few weeks.

Higuaín suffered from a back injury this season, which kept him out for over four months. Despite this, he still netted 13 goals in 25 games. In his previous two seasons at Real, he scored 53 goals in 84 matches, which put him on the map as one of the great strikers in Europe. The 23 year old was born in France (making it more likely that Wenger will push for a transfer) but plays with Messi in the Argentinian national team. He has a great set of attributes – height, pace and a powerful strike.

He signed for Real for €13 million from River Plate, and it is likely that he will cost in excess of the £15 million that the papers are quoting. Spurs and Man City are also supposedly interested, but Man City are interested in everyone these days. City have the following strikers in their official squad:

Tevez, Dzeko, Adebayor, Balotelli, Jo, Caicedo, Bellamy, Santa Cruz and David Silva (he often plays off the striker)

It would be stupid and unfair for City to sign Higuaín when they have that kind of attacking talent, because even he would struggle to get a game. Then again, the majority of those players are set to leave, and City haven’t been known for being ‘fair’ when it comes to making transfer decisions.

Do Arsenal need the Argentine? Probably – we need a great partner to RvP. And we have probably all forgotten that our Dutchman will be injured for some of next season, so we might as well have a decent back up! Will Arsenal sign him? I doubt it – it doesn’t feel like the type of signing Wenger would make. And I can’t see Mourinho letting him leave Madrid anyway. To me, this transfer seems like the Daily Mail’s attempt to spread some poorly-researched gossip.

Peter Odemwingie

Odemwingie joined West Brom from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2010, and made 32 league appearances this season, netting 15 goals. He netted two goals against Arsenal last season as his club managed to gain four points off the Gunners, which helped the Baggies finish 11th. He chose to play for Nigeria, but had the options of both Russia and Uzbekistan.

At 29 years old, and having been unable to prove himself at the top level, I cannot see Wenger making this signing. He is supposedly up for grabs at £4 million, which seems quite a bargain for a player who finished fifth in the top scorers list last year, bettered only by Berbatov, Tevez, van Persie and Darren Bent:

Berbatov 20

Tevez 20

RvP 18

Bent 17

Odemwingie 15

DJ Campbell 13

Carroll 13

In some ways, I would prefer that Wenger spend £4 million on Odemwingie than £25 million on Benzema. The extra £21 million come be used to bolster the weaker areas of the squad, such as left back and centre back. Arsenal score plenty of goals and have a host of attacking flair. Odemwingie would provide Arsenal with yet another type of forward – he is a mixture of RvP and Chamakh. He hassles the defence, has an aerial presence and can run in behind the last defender.
