Transfer Talk: Gunners to step up interest in Montpellier attacking midfielder

Arsenal look set to step up their interest in Montpellier attacking midfielder/winger Younes Belhanda after the club’s owner admitted that the Moroccan international could leave in the summer.

Speaking to French radio station RMC, Louis Nicollin said that Belhanda is the best player at Montpellier, but that he and striker Olivier Giroud will be allowed to leave if the club is offered enough money.

“The largest pearl, the biggest ruby is Younis. He is stronger than Hazard, Pastore and company. He has more class.

‘If we’re offered a lot of money, Giroud and Belhanda will certainly go.”

Arsène Wenger is known to be a fan of Belhanda, who has scored 11 goals in 27 appearances this season. The 22-year-old has previously suggested that he wishes to play in the Premier League and Wenger made comments last month which clearly show that he is on our radar.

“I know Younes well and like him a lot.

“But I don’t want to cause problems. Only Montpellier can decide where he goes to.”

Despite beginning his career in a more defensive role, Belhanda has developed into a fully fledged attacking midfielder who has been compared by his coach René Giarar to Robert Pires – a player who Arsenal fans will know all about. However, it is difficult to know if Arsenal are in the market for an attacking midfielder. Song and Arteta play much deeper roles, Tomas Rosicky is 31 and Aaron Ramsey needs to work on his finishing, but we will have Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby back in the side next season as well as (hopefully) Lukas Podolski.

“His desire to get on the ball combined with excellent technique means he can play through the middle or on the wings. He reminds me of Robert Pires.”
